Cleaning Teeth the Dentist Way

Cleaning teeth the dentist way

Good oral health starts with taking care of your teeth and gums. The best way to keep your smile healthy and clean is to brush and floss your teeth every day. The team at Dr. Motiwala Dental Clinic & Implant Centre, will teach you the art of dental care in this guide.

Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Floss & Mouthwash

Before we talk about how to do something, we need to make sure you have the right tools. You’ll need a toothbrush, toothpaste with fluoride, and floss. You can use any floss that feels good to you and any toothpaste you like, as long as it has fluoride. Mouthwash isn’t needed, but some people like the extra health boost they get from swishing and gargling.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE A GOOD TOOTHBRUSH?

  • Always choose a soft brush. Medium or hard bristles can hurt enamel.
  • Pick a toothbrush that fits your mouth well. The brush’s head should be small enough to reach all the way behind your back teeth and fit easily in your mouth and hand.
  • Electric toothbrushes are fine, but if you know how to brush your teeth like a pro, you can get the same results with a normal toothbrush.
  • Don’t forget to get a new toothbrush every three to four months, after you get over a cold, or when the brushes start to look messed up.

Floss Like a Boss

Dr. Motiwala tells us that we need to floss before we brush. So, you can be sure that the particles and bacteria you find when flossing will be cleared when you brush your teeth properly after flossing. At least once a day, you should floss.

  • Wrap around your two middle fingers about 18 inches of floss, with most of it on one finger.
  • Work the floss between two teeth, wrap it around the back tooth, and move it up and down several times. Then do the same thing with your front tooth.
  • Be careful not to “snap” the floss, as this can hurt your gums.
  • As you get to each tooth, let out a little more floss and wrap it around your finger to tighten it. So, nasty stuff from one tooth won’t get stuck between two other teeth.

Expert Brushing Techniques

Now that we’ve talked about toothbrushes, floss, and toothpaste, it’s time to show the good people how to brush their teeth like a doctor. Here we go!

  • At least twice a day, brush. Before breakfast and right before bed are the best times.
  • Don’t put too much toothpaste on your brush. You only need a bit the size of a pea. If you use more than that, your lips will get foamy and you’ll be more likely to swallow fluoride, which is bad for your health.
  • For at least two minutes, brush. Most people don’t brush long enough, which is the most common mistake. You can keep track of time with a stopwatch, an hourglass, or just by singing a song. There are even apps for your phone that can help you stay on track.
  • Start by putting the 45-degree end of your toothbrush on your gum line.
  • You can brush up and down or in a circle, but you should NOT brush across.
  • Don’t use too much force. If you don’t brush long enough, it doesn’t matter how hard you brush. In fact, brushing too hard can damage enamel and even hurt lips enough to cause painful gum recession and the showing of tooth roots.
  • Make sure to brush the front, back, sides, corners, and chewing areas of all your teeth. If you spend 30 seconds brushing each side of your upper and lower teeth, you have a much better chance of getting everything.
  • Cleanse your mouth. Most of the bacteria that cause bad breath live on your tongue.
  • Rinse your mouth and brush, and if you want to, use a little mouthwash and pack it in.
  • Give yourself a pat on the back for brushing your teeth the right way and taking good care of your mouth.
